Most of us want to do more in less time. We try so hard to squeeze in as much work as we can in the allotted number of hours. If we were all going to be productive, everything in this world would be fine and dandy. We all strive to be more productive because this means that we can attain more and be more of a success. With success usually comes financial stability, and of course, that means that we could basically have the things we want most in life. The problem is, most of us do not know how to become productive individuals.
People usually relate productivity to accomplishing more, getting more work done. The truth is, that is always not the case. In fact, true success comes when you pull off more results by doing less and by having more time for yourself and your family. We often have too much on our plates, and that has been the problem. When we look closely at the things we have to fulfill, we’ll realize that we can actually let go of some of the things. Things that contribute little value should be removed altogether. Those are the tasks that actually make us think that we have more to show for because we are very busy.
In order for our lives to be more fruitful, we first need to segregate the tasks into two basic groups: those that are important and those that aren’t. This requires us to be highly efficient and effective at the same time. If we counted the number of hours spent at the office, we will notice that we don’t devote every minute to work. In fact, some of the time we spend talking to our colleagues and doing things that don’t contribute much to work. This isn’t to say that we must cut all relationships at work. Of course, not! The friendships we develop in the office make things more fun. We look forward to waking up in the morning more if we know that we will surround ourselves with people we truly like and respect. But then, we also have to know the distinction between work and play. Come crunch time, we should never let ourselves get distracted by other activities.
We should take advantage of the hours we spend at work. To cope with stress, we also should allow ourselves to take small breaks in between. However, we also should be strict with the time we spend during these breaks. When it’s time to get back to work, we must gather our wits about and start to become productive once more.
We have to be more conscious about our working habits. We should choose to work only on things that are truly important. The trivial things can be set at a much later time when we’ve freed ourselves from the more important tasks. This way, we are actually spending less hours yet achieving so much more.
Another way to leverage ourselves with the things we can do is to create a sense of urgency and eliminate procrastination. We think that just because deadlines are set far away we don’t need to work on things immediately. If we have time to spare, we might as well do things so that it’s weight off our shoulders.
