Look Like You Mean Business

1

When it comes to work, you shouldn’t screw up. In fact, you need to like the professional that you are. Otherwise, people will never take you seriously. It’s even harder for women, they say. When you dress like a teenager, you might have your opinions laughed at. You try so hard to share what you think is right, but sometimes, people can be judgmental. Even if many claim that they never judge the book by its cover, they don’t actually mean what they say. Sometimes, even making the wrong impression destroys you. Hence, it’s time that you mean business and look the part.

Work hard at investing in the right office wardrobe. Get to know the company’s culture. This may be a little hard at first. Hence, there are safe ensembles that you need to always have. Never be without a crisp, white shirt and a pair of plain black slacks. However, no matter what type of dress code is being implemented, you should always be appropriate. You might like feeling and looking sexy, but this should only be reserved for nights out with your gal pals. Instead, try to go for classy pieces. Solid colors are always safe. Get those with clean cuts and just mix them up within the week. If you want to express your stylish side, accessorize if you want as long as you don’t go overboard. You can still find ways to look sharp without sacrificing your personal style. The secret here is to look pristine and respectable. Even if you have casual Fridays, don’t be too sloppy. You still might have client meetings on those days. Hence, always play it safe to avoid embarrassing yourself.

Looking like you mean business also goes way beyond the aesthetic. You also have to start talking like a true professional. This simply means that while you can use modern-day jargons with your colleagues, practice care when you talk to your bosses and clients. This holds especially true for the office memos you create. Also make it a point to learn the common terms used by the people in the company. Do your own research by asking around. The higher ups will appreciate the fact that you’re doing your best to fit in. Mingle with coworkers and gain knowledge in the process. As for what you write, make sure that you proofread everything before sending them out. You wouldn’t want people to think that you’re careless about the work you do. Exercise structure and be careful whenever possible.

Most importantly, let everyone around you know that you’re willing to play hard for the team. Whether you’re the leader or a member, show others that you can always be counted on, especially when it comes to the more difficult tasks. Take everything seriously and goof off only when you’re out of the office building. It’s all about being trustworthy because when you try your best, the rewards will come sooner than you think. You can expect to see yourself climbing up the ladder of success.
